Exploring a Forgotten World:  A Social History of Medieval Jewry as Revealed in the Cairo Genizah

This course will reveal how a collection of worn-out scraps, fragments of texts and other manuscripts and documents found more than 1,000 years ago open an otherwise hidden era of history.  We will learn the story of the Genizah (a storeroom for timeworn sacred manuscripts and docu etns) as well as examine selected contents of the Genizah.  Through translations of the original texts, the course will explore the daily lives and behaviors of Jewish men, women and families living along the Mediterranean during the middle ages.

Time:  9:30 am - 11:00 am via Zoom

Jewish Medical Ethics: A 21st Century Discussion

Within the field of ethics, one of the most challenging frontiers is medical ethics. While contemporary medical knowledge preserves life, modern advances have raised moral and ethical issues related to the sanctity and dignity of life - issues whose scope was unimaginable a generation ago.  A new ten-lesson Melton course on Jewish Medical Ethics explores Jewish approaches to a number of challenging dilemmas including human cloning, surrogate motherhood, transsexual surgery, assisted suicide and genetic manipulation.

Day:  Mondays beginning on October 19, 2020 - December 21, 2020

Time:  7:30 pm - 9:00 pm via Zoom

Faculty:  Rabbi Gary Fink
