This course is a study of fundamental physics and focuses on both theory and experimentation. Forensic Science is the study of the application of science to the law. This integrated science course is designed to explore the scientific and technological aspects of criminal investigations. Topics will include the study of DNA, glass, blood, fingerprinting, chemical residues, and evidence collection as it relates to forensic issues. This course will integrate chemistry, physics, and the biochemistry of forensic science.
*This course is taught by our Upper School Science Teacher, Kiran Vaswani-Sippy.

Caution: Before deciding on this course, please note that this course is not for the faint of heart. There will be gruesome pictures and videos of crime scenes, as well as discussions about drugs.


*This course will count towards a lab-science course. (Please note: 3 lab-science courses are required for graduation). It is a 1 full credit course.

Join Nicki Ragan, CDS Director of Marketing, to discover smartphone photography tips for capturing beautiful images. Student will learn how to change your camera settings and improve composition, as well as the best apps for shooting in low light and capturing macro imaging. Students will also learn how to use powerful editing apps to make adjustments, create depth of field, design multi-exposure images, and customize photos with unique effects. After the week, each student will have a full portfolio of images to be proud of and the opportunity to get volunteer hours during the following school year by helping the CDS marketing department with photography.

Part 1: General Applications, expectations, technology systems, vocabulary system, and executive functioning skills for middle school.

This is the first of two consecutive courses offered in the summer for rising middle school students, and is designed to prepare students for the student life and classroom expectations, as well as required technology systems usage in all courses throughout their academic careers at CDS. This course is designed to help the student become a more independent learner and to develop effective executive functioning skills that will arm him/her with the knowledge and strategies needed to be successful in the middle school and high school. Students will learn how to use our Schoology program where students access assignments, turn in work, communicate with other students and teachers, and access their grades for each course. Students will get a jump-start using our technology-based vocabulary program, Membean, with guidance and support from the teacher throughout. Students will learn how to formulate a professional letter to their teachers through Schoology, as well as how to upload an assignment and convert the format for teachers requiring it in their courses.

Part 2: July 26th - 30th Personalized Executive Functioning, Technology, and Study Skills; Completion of Academic Summer Assignments for Fall 2021 School Year

In continuation of our foundation established in Week 7, students will learn improved organizational and time management skills, increased orientation to available resources, school facilities, procedures, problem-solving, and communications skills, while completing their academic summer assignments for Fall Semester 2021. With teacher modeling and simulations, students will experience and apply selected basic elements of technology (learned during Week 7) combined with strategies and systems knowledge in order to problem solve and produce work that shows academic excellence. In addition, students will be guided with the instruction and support of their 6th grade Language and Literature teacher on how to apply their knowledge to completing their summer assignments and projects. Students will be using Schoology, IXL, Membean, and iMovie during this course to complete their summer work. One emphasis of this course is wise The basic keyboarding skills which one uses in personal life and work are emphasized in this course. Students will develop proper computer keyboarding skills by practicing keying on a computer keyboard and numeric keypad. Emphasis is on the development of proper keyboarding skills, building speed and accuracy.

*This course is especially helpful for incoming Middle School students who are new to CDS!
