Join use for the Speech and Debate Quick Start workshop on July 10th. Hosted by Carter Casey, NSDA and NCFL National Qualifier and Team Captain, the Debate Quick Start course introduces the basics of Lincoln Douglas Debate including, research, critical thinking, organization, persuasion, winning strategies and much more!

Are you an actor? Curious about public speaking? Speech competitions are a perfect place to start. The workshop will provide background and overview of the many Speech events including Student Congress, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Original Oratory. Speech events include single and duo performances, so don't miss out!

Speech and Debate Team members can quickly earn membership to Pi Kappa Delta, one of the most highly regarded honor societies in the country. Speech and Debate is also highly coveted by colleges and will be a highlight on college applications. Most importantly, it is FUN! Part 1: General Applications, expectations, technology systems, vocabulary system, and executive functioning skills for middle school.

This is the first of two consecutive courses offered in the summer for rising middle school students, and is designed to prepare students for the student life and classroom expectations, as well as required technology systems usage in all courses throughout their academic careers at CDS. This course is designed to help the student become a more independent learner and to develop effective executive functioning skills that will arm him/her with the knowledge and strategies needed to be successful in the middle school and high school. Students will learn how to use our Schoology program where students access assignments, turn in work, communicate with other students and teachers, and access their grades for each course. Students will get a jump-start using our technology-based vocabulary program, Membean, with guidance and support from the teacher throughout. Students will learn how to formulate a professional letter to their teachers through Schoology, as well as how to upload an assignment and convert the format for teachers requiring it in their courses.

Part 2: July 26th - 30th Personalized Executive Functioning, Technology, and Study Skills; Completion of Academic Summer Assignments for Fall 2021 School Year

In continuation of our foundation established in Week 7, students will learn improved organizational and time management skills, increased orientation to available resources, school facilities, procedures, problem-solving, and communications skills, while completing their academic summer assignments for Fall Semester 2021. With teacher modeling and simulations, students will experience and apply selected basic elements of technology (learned during Week 7) combined with strategies and systems knowledge in order to problem solve and produce work that shows academic excellence. In addition, students will be guided with the instruction and support of their 6th grade Language and Literature teacher on how to apply their knowledge to completing their summer assignments and projects. Students will be using Schoology, IXL, Membean, and iMovie during this course to complete their summer work. One emphasis of this course is wise The basic keyboarding skills which one uses in personal life and work are emphasized in this course. Students will develop proper computer keyboarding skills by practicing keying on a computer keyboard and numeric keypad. Emphasis is on the development of proper keyboarding skills, building speed and accuracy.

*This course is especially helpful for incoming Middle School students who are new to CDS!
