Melton Kansas City 2020-21

Event Details

You are about to embark on an exciting adventure as you join students from over 45 sites in North America, the United Kingdom, Australia, and South Africa that are currently part of the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning network.  Dedicated to providing a solid foundation of adult Jewish education to serious, sophisticated students, the Florence Melton School has proven to be an experience that changes lives and shapes communities.  Throughout its history the Florence Melton School has helped over 40,000 adults achieve Jewish literacy in a comfortable, pluralistic environment.  It has inspired them to become dedicated learners - to explore and to experience, to challenge and to define what Judaism means for themselves and their children.  We look forward to another wonderful year of Jewish learning!

The Melton School in Kansas City is a program of Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy that receives funding from Menorah Legacy Foundation and the Jewish Federation of Greater Kansas City.  The Melton School is supported by Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy, along with consortium partners Congregation BIAV, Congregation Beth Shalom, The Temple, Congregation B'nai Jehudah, Village Shalom and a number of individual donors who have pledged to support Melton at HBHA.

BeMidbar: Leadership Defied and Defended

Israel's fateful journey through the wilderness of Sinai presented numerous challenges to the leadership of Moses and Aaron; at times the nation challenged their competence as leaders, and at times individuals arose to challenge their very right to lead.  This course will survey the dramatic events of Sefer BeMidbar, through analysis and biblical texts, artwork, and related commentaries, old and new.

Exploring a Forgotten World: A Social History of Medieval Jewry as Revealed in the Cairo Genizah

This course will reveal how a collection of worn-out scraps, fragments of texts and other manuscripts and documents found more than 1,000 years old open an otherwise hidden era of history.  We will learn the story of the Genizah (a storeroom for timeworn sacred manuscripts and documents) as well as examine selected contents of the Genizah.  Through translations of the original texts, the course will explore the daily lives and behaviors of Jewish men, women and families living along the Mediterranean during the Middle Ages.

Beyond Borders: Understanding the Arab-Israeli Conflict

This course provides students with a strong, text-based historical overview from the late nineteenth century through today. Course material is designed to encourage discussion and debate, and to challenge students to appreciate the basis of the conflicting historical claims made by all sides in the conflict. The complexity of the conflict forces students to grapple with issues of religion, culture, history, politics, economics, identity and survival—all reflected through primary sources, including newspaper articles, poetry, songs, government documents, speeches, photographs and memoirs. The 10-lesson course will provide students with new tools for understanding and critiquing texts and events as the conflict continues to unfold.
