Melton Louisville 2020-21

Event Details

You are about to embark on an exciting adventure as you join students from over 45 sites in North America, Australia, and South Africa that are currently part of the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning network.  Dedicated to providing a solid foundation of adult Jewish education to serious, sophisticated students, the Florence Melton School has proven to be an experience that changes lives and shapes communities.  Throughout its history the Florence Melton School has helped over 40,000 adults achieve Jewish literacy in a comfortable, pluralistic environment.  It has inspired them to become dedicated learners - to explore and to experience, to challenge and to define what Judaism means for themselves and their children.  We look forward to another wonderful year of Jewish learning!

Social Justice:  The Heart of Judaism

This course will draw from text and from history to explore just how social justice work goes beyond addressing short-term needs and looks at structural causes of injustice and how these are best addressed today.  Topics include issues related to poverty, immigration and environmental degradation.  Students will be encouraged to dedicate class time early in their study to identify issues that are particular to their own communities and that they would like to explore in greater depth.

Day:  Thursdays beginning on November 19, 2020 - February 11, 2021

Time:  11:00 am - 12:30 pm via Zoom

Devarim (Deuteronomy)

The fifth of the five books of Moses, the Book of Deuteronomy, is a book of prose and poetry, laws and ethics.  In Deuteronomy, Moses reflects with hindsight on his journey with the Jewish people through the wilderness, while at the same time he encourages the people to live with foresight as they make their preparations to enter the Promised Land without him.  Significantly, while Deuteronomy contains the words of one man reflecting on the journey of one people, learners will quickly find out that the wisdom found in this final book of the Torah has spoken to many people, through their many different live journeys, throughout the ages.

Jewish Medical Ethics: A 21st Century Discussion

Within the field of ethics, one of the most challenging frontiers is medical ethics. While contemporary medical knowledge preserves life, modern advances have raised moral and ethical issues related to the sanctity and dignity of life - issues whose scope was unimaginable a generation ago.  A new ten-lesson Melton course on Jewish Medical Ethics explores Jewish approaches to a number of challenging dilemmas including human cloning, surrogate motherhood, assisted suicide and genetic manipulation.

Day:  Thursdays beginning on February 18, 2021 - May 6, 2021
